Recent updates in the Canadian Immigration system provide international education students with a clear and promising route to permanent residency (PR) for students in the field of education. Now, education has been added to the list of eligible fields of study for Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWPs) as well as to the new category-based selection under Express Entry.
Under this newly launched system, International can pursue any education program at a level of study lower than a bachelor’s degree, obtain a PGWP, then gain work experience in Canada, qualifying them for education occupation draws through the Express Entry system.
Eligibility and Specific Requirements for the New Framework
To understand the eligibility better, let’s consider this example: a graduate from Taima, who completed a two-year Early Childhood Education diploma at Sheridan College, can apply for a PGWP and work full-time while gaining registration with the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators. After one year of Canadian work experience, her CRS score would make her a strong candidate for the education category-based draws, which have lower CRS cut-offs compared to general draws.
Other than this, eligibility for the PGWP and Express Entry requires you to meet specific language proficiency thresholds and study program requirements. The education category in Express Entry also introduces occupation-specific draws for professions such as early childhood educators, elementary and secondary school teachers, and instructors of persons with disabilities.

Canada’s Strategic Move Towards a New Education Immigration Pathway
This new immigration approach is made after figuring out the growing need for educational professionals across Canada and presents a well-defined route from study to permanent residency for international students committed to contributing to the Canadian education sector.
For students aiming to settle permanently in Canada, knowing these routes is essential, and carefully selecting PGWP-eligible education programs at DLIs is a critical first step. Additionally, graduates who receive an Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) for their PR application can apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit to maintain legal worker status during processing.
This new immigration framework in education offers a strategic opportunity for international education students to make a successful future in Canada’s education field.
