Overview of Canada Disability Benefit 2026
The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a federal income support Initiative, which is designed to assist low-income Canadians who are aged between 18 to 64, living with a disability. Eligible candidates for the Canada Disability Benefit payments can receive up to CAD 2,400 per year, which provides them with much-needed financial relief
The benefit was officially established through the Canada Disability Benefit Act, which became a law starting June 22, 2024, following extensive advocacy by disability rights groups throughout the country. The first payment under CDB was issued in July 2025, making it an important milestone in disability support in Canada.
The funding for this initiative was allocated Under Canada budget 2024, which dedicated CAD 6.1 billion up to 2030 to implement the program. Unlike the provincial disability assistance programme, the CDB offers consistent federal support regardless of the province or territory. Most importantly, it is designed to supplement existing disability benefits rather than replace them, helping recipients who previously remained below the poverty line, despite receiving other assistance
Objectives of the Canada Disability Benefit
- CDB benefit aims to reduce poverty among working-age Canadians living with disabilities, and improve financial stability
- Providing monthly payments as a dependable income source, hence contributing to their better overall quality of life.
- Supporting the accessibility needs of the recipients who can use these funds to pay for medication, mobility aids, home accessibility improvements, etc.
- Encouraging workforce participation as partial income exemptions still allows recipients to earn income while receiving support. Next slide.
