In a significant move for aspiring Indian students, the US Embassy has announced the release of thousands of student visa slots across its consulates. This initiative comes as part of efforts to streamline the visa process ahead of the upcoming academic year. With increased availability, students can now secure appointments more efficiently. This update brings renewed hope for those planning to pursue higher education in the United States.
Increased Access to Student Visa Appoinments Across India
The US Embassy has opened thousands of student visa appointment slots across all its consulates in India, including major centers like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. This step aims to ease the visa process for students heading to the US for higher studies in the upcoming academic cycle. A dedicated webpage has also been shared where students can track visa slot availability by country.
US Ambassador Eric Garcetti highlighted the growing importance of student mobility between India and the United States. He affirmed that the US remains committed to encouraging more applications from Indian students while valuing the long-term educational and cultural ties shared between the two countries.
The demand for the education system in the US among Indian students has continued to grow. In 2023 alone, US consulates in India issued over 140,000 student visas, marking the highest number globally and breaking previous records for the third consecutive year. In total, the US Mission in India processed an impressive 1.4 million visa applications that year, reflecting the strong bilateral engagement.
Before applying for a student visa, applicants need to secure admission to a US institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which provides the Form I-20. After receiving this form, students should complete the DS-160 application, pay the SEVIS fee, and schedule their visa appointment through the official U.S. Travel Docs website. The embassy also advises students to avoid unofficial agents and rely only on authorized sources to ensure accurate guidance.
